Walls & Ceilings

Four walls and a ceiling make a room but how do the walls and ceiling get made? Today, drywall is a popular material used to construct walls. Texturing, priming and painting come next. Drywall hangers are adept at cutting such large sheets then fitting them around windows, outlets and doorways. These installers must then smooth out any rough patches with joint compound, commonly referred to as mud. After the mud is dry, they sand it down until the walls are perfectly smooth and must repeat these steps if necessary. A similar scenario is completed for a ceiling. Next comes the texturing process. Contractors can come in and quickly spray a room's walls with a desired texture. Do-it-yourselfers can also texture with tools, time and patience. Popular texturing styles include knockdown, skip trowel and orange peel. The reason homeowners may opt for textured walls is to add drama and even out any drywall imperfections. When the walls are completely dry, priming can commence. Painting takes place as soon as the primer is dry. Homeowners can hire painters to complete the priming and painting or they can dive right in themselves. A room with a properly textured ceiling and walls can complement any home.
